Tehillim 80 – תהלים פ‏ – Mikraot Gedolot

פָּנִיתָא מִן קֳדָמֵיהוֹן כְּנַעֲנָאֵי וְשֵׁרָשְׁתָּא שׁוֹרָשֵׁיהוֹן וּמַלְאַת אַרְעָא.

You cleared out the Canaanites before them, and you uprooted their roots and filled the land.

בעד מא נג׳לת מן בין ידיהא, פאצלת אצולהא ומלאת אלארץ׳.

אחרי שפינית את האויבים מלפניה (מלפני הגפן הזאת שהיא כנסת ישראל). והפרדת את השורשים [נתת להם להסתעף] עד שהם מלאו את העולם.

פנית לפניה – את היושבים שם.

ותַשרש שרשיה – השרישה שרשיה.

You cleared before it those dwelling there.

פנית לפניה – אבנים וצרורות.

פנית – לסקלח מהאבנים והם הרשעים.

ותשרש – מבניין הכבד הנוסף להפריש^א השרש, ומבניין הכבד להכרית השרש, כמו: ושרשך (תהלים נ״ב:ז׳).

THOU DIDST CLEAR A PLACE BEFORE IT. You removed the stones – that is, the wicked.⁠¹

AND IT TOOK DEEP ROOT. Va-tashresh (and it took deep root) is a hiphil. It means, “to cause the root to be implanted.”² However, when the stem of va-tashresh comes in the pi’el, then it means “to uproot.” Compare this to ve-shereshkha (and pluck thee out) (Psalms 52:7).

2. I have followed Filwarg’s reading. Filwarg reads le-hashrish rather than le-hafrish, as it is in the printed editions. In other words, va-tashresh sharashehah means, “and it implanted its roots.” Ha-Keter reads le-hafrot sharashehah – “to make fruitful her roots.”

פנית לפניה – שלא עמד איש בפניהם (יהושע כ״א:מ״ד).

ותשרש – מבנין הפעיל – נתינת השרש. ומבנין פעל הדגוש – עקירת השרש, ובכל תבואתי תשרש (איוב ל״א:י״ב), ושרשך מארץ חיים (תהלים נ״ב:ז׳).

פנית – ענין הסרה והפנוי מן המקום.

פנית לפניה – את העובדי כוכבים ההם ושרשת שרשיה של ישראל ותמלא את הארץ ממנה.
