They [=the rabbis] said that מליקה is not the same as slaughtering ((שחיטה; it involves cutting through the backbone and the shoulder bone by hand, not with a knife. The verse demonstrates that מליקה is not like slaughtering as it says, “ומלק את ראשו – he should m-l-q its head,” and not “ומלק אותו – he should m-l-q it” .... Perhaps you might say: “Slaughtering is done at the neck. The neck is close to the head. [So there is nothing strange about the phrase ‘he should m-l-q its head’ even if the reference is to slaughtering with a knife.]” In that case, I would answer: “Even if slaughtering were done on the head itself, that answer would be worthless to you. Because even if the verb ‘slaughter’ referred to an action focused on the head, still the object of the verb is always the dead body [not the head]. Referring to slaughtering, it always says: ‘he shall slaughter it’ (e.g. Lev. 1:11) ... or ‘he shall slaughter the bull’ (Lev. 1:5) or ‘he shall slaughter the living bird’ (ושחט את הצפור החיה; a misquotation of Lev. 14:5).” Accordingly we say that if מליקה were a form of slaughtering, the text would not say “he should m l q its head,” but rather “he should m-l-q it.”

Prayer for Our Soldiers
May He who blessed our fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, bless the soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces, who keep guard over our country and cities of our God, from the border with Lebanon to the Egyptian desert and from the Mediterranean Sea to the approach to the Arava, be they on land, air, or sea. May Hashem deliver into their hands our enemies who arise against us! May the Holy One, blessed be He, watch over them and save them from all sorrow and peril, from danger and ill, and may He send blessing and success in all their endeavors. May He deliver into their hands those who hate us, and May He crown them with salvation and victory. And may it be fulfilled through them the verse, "For Hashem, your God, who goes with you, to fight your enemies for you and to save you", and let us say: Amen.
