5. יַעֲשֶׂה פַרְעֹה

These are those who were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the Children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.
128-129. וּבְאֵלֶּה לֹא הָיָה אִישׁ

The officers who were over the thousands of the army, the captains of thousands, and the captains of hundreds, came near to Moses;

יְהֹוָהי״י אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֵל קַנָּא

139-140. וַיִּתְפָּקְדוּ בְנֵי בִנְיָמִן בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא מֵהֶעָרִים עֶשְׂרִים וְשִׁשָּׁה אֶלֶף אִישׁ שֹׁלֵף חָרֶב לְבַד מִיֹּשְׁבֵי הַגִּבְעָה
הִתְפָּקְדוּ שְׁבַע מֵאוֹת אִישׁ בָּחוּר.

The children of Benjamin were counted on that day out of the cities twenty-six thousand men who drew the sword, besides the inhabitants of Gibeah who were counted seven hundred chosen men.

They said, Hashem, the God of Israel, "Why has this happened in Israel, that there should be today one tribe lacking in Israel?"

152-153. אִם

וְנִפְקַדְתָּ כִּי
יִפָּקֵד מוֹשָׁבֶךָ.

And it came to pass on the next day after the new moon, which was the second day, that David's place was empty; and Saul said to Jonathan his son, "Why did the son of Jesse not come to the meal, neither yesterday nor today?"
158. וְעַתָּה שָׁמַעְתִּי כִּי גֹזְזִים לָךְ עַתָּה הָרֹעִים אֲשֶׁר לְךָ הָיוּ עִמָּנוּ לֹא הֶכְלַמְנוּם וְלֹא
נִפְקַד לָהֶם מְאוּמָה כׇּל יְמֵי הֱיוֹתָם בַּכַּרְמֶל.

And now I have heard that you have shearers. Your shepherds have now been with us, and we did not harm them, and nothing was missing from them all the time they were in Carmel.

פָקַדְנוּ מְאוּמָה כׇּל יְמֵי הִתְהַלַּכְנוּ אִתָּם בִּהְיוֹתֵנוּ בַּשָּׂדֶה.

But the men were very good to us, and we were not hurt and we did not miss anything all the time that we went with them, when we were in the fields.
160. וְדָוִד אָמַר אַךְ לַשֶּׁקֶר שָׁמַרְתִּי אֶת כׇּל אֲשֶׁר לָזֶה בַּמִּדְבָּר וְלֹא
נִפְקַד מִכׇּל אֲשֶׁר לוֹ מְאוּמָה וַיָּשֶׁב לִי רָעָה תַּחַת טוֹבָה.

Now David had said, "Surely in vain have I kept all that this fellow has in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that pertained to him; and he has returned me evil for good.

הִפְקַדְתּוֹ שָׁם וְלֹא יֵרֵד עִמָּנוּ בַּמִּלְחָמָה וְלֹא יִהְיֶה לָּנוּ לְשָׂטָן בַּמִּלְחָמָה וּבַמֶּה יִתְרַצֶּה זֶה אֶל אֲדֹנָיו הֲלוֹא בְּרָאשֵׁי הָאֲנָשִׁים הָהֵם.

But the princes of the Philistines were angry with him. And Joab returned from following Abner, and when he gathered all the people together, nineteen men and Asahel were missing from David's servants.

The king's word prevailed against Joab and against the captains of the army. And Joab and the captains of the army went out from the presence of the king, to count the people of Israel.

And King Rehoboam made in their stead shields of brass, and committed them to the hands of the captains of the guard, who kept the door of the king's house.

וַיִּפְקֹד בֶּן הֲדַד אֶת אֲרָם וַיַּעַל אֲפֵקָה לַמִּלְחָמָה עִם יִשְׂרָאֵל.

And it came to pass at the turn of the year, that Ben-hadad mustered the Arameans, and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.
172. וּבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל
הׇתְפָּקְדוּ וְכׇלְכְּלוּ וַיֵּלְכוּ לִקְרָאתָם וַיַּחֲנוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל נֶגְדָּם כִּשְׁנֵי חֲשִׂפֵי עִזִּים וַאֲרָם מִלְאוּ אֶת הָאָרֶץ.

And the Children of Israel were mustered and provisioned, and they went to meet them. And the Children of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of kids; but the Arameans filled the country.

הִפָּקֵד יִפָּקֵד וְהָיְתָה נַפְשְׁךָ תַּחַת נַפְשׁוֹ אוֹ כִכַּר כֶּסֶף תִּשְׁקוֹל.

יִפָּקֵד כִּי זֶבַח גָּדוֹל לִי לַבַּעַל כֹּל אֲשֶׁר
יִפָּקֵד לֹא יִחְיֶה וְיֵהוּא עָשָׂה בְעׇקְבָּה לְמַעַן הַאֲבִיד אֶת עֹבְדֵי הַבָּעַל.

Now therefore call to me all the prophets of Baal, all his worshippers, and all his priests, let no one be missing; for I have a great sacrifice to do to Baal. Whoever is missing, he shall not live." But Jehu did it deceptively, so as to destroy the worshippers of Baal.

185. וַיָּבֹא שָׁפָן הַסֹּפֵר אֶל הַמֶּלֶךְ וַיָּשֶׁב אֶת הַמֶּלֶךְ דָּבָר וַיֹּאמֶר הִתִּיכוּ עֲבָדֶיךָ אֶת הַכֶּסֶף הַנִּמְצָא בַבַּיִת וַיִּתְּנֻהוּ עַל יַד עֹשֵׂי הַמְּלָאכָה

And Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and he brought back word to the king and said, "Your servants have poured out the money that was found in the house and have delivered it into the hand of the workmen who have the oversight of the house of Hashem."
186. וְהָעָם הַנִּשְׁאָר בְּאֶרֶץ יְהוּדָה אֲשֶׁר הִשְׁאִיר נְבוּכַדְנֶאצַּר מֶלֶךְ בָּבֶל
וַיַּפְקֵד עֲלֵיהֶם אֶת גְּדַלְיָהוּ בֶּן אֲחִיקָם בֶּן שָׁפָן.

And as for the people that were left in the land of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had left, he made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, governor over them.

הִפְקִיד מֶלֶךְ בָּבֶל אֶת גְּדַלְיָהוּ וַיָּבֹאוּ אֶל גְּדַלְיָהוּ הַמִּצְפָּה וְיִשְׁמָעֵאל בֶּן נְתַנְיָה וְיוֹחָנָן בֶּן קָרֵחַ וּשְׂרָיָה בֶן תַּנְחֻמֶת הַנְּטֹפָתִי וְיַאֲזַנְיָהוּ בֶּן הַמַּעֲכָתִי הֵמָּה וְאַנְשֵׁיהֶם.

Now when all the captains of the forces, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah governor, they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite and Jaazaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men.
188. וְהָיָה כִּי יְבַצַּע אֲדֹנָי אֶת כׇּל מַעֲשֵׂהוּ בְּהַר צִיּוֹן וּבִירוּשָׁלָ͏ִם
אֶפְקֹד עַל פְּרִי גֹדֶל לְבַב מֶלֶךְ אַשּׁוּר וְעַל תִּפְאֶרֶת רוּם עֵינָיו.

Therefore it shall come to pass, that when Hashem has performed His whole work upon Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his haughty looks.
189. בָּא עַל עַיַּת עָבַר בְּמִגְרוֹן לְמִכְמָשׂ

Hark, a tumult in the mountains, as of a great people! Hark, the uproar of the kingdoms of the nations gathered together! Hashem of hosts musters the host of the battle.
191. וּפָקַדְתִּי עַל תֵּבֵל רָעָה וְעַל רְשָׁעִים עֲוֺנָם וְהִשְׁבַּתִּי גְּאוֹן זֵדִים וְגַאֲוַת עָרִיצִים אַשְׁפִּיל.

יִפְקֹד יְהֹוָהי״י אֶת צֹר וְשָׁבָה לְאֶתְנַנָּה וְזָנְתָה אֶת כׇּל מַמְלְכוֹת הָאָרֶץ עַל פְּנֵי הָאֲדָמָה.

And it shall come to pass after the end of seventy years, that Hashem will remember Tyre, and she shall return to her hire and shall have commerce with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth.
193. וְהָיָה בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא
יִפְקֹד יְהֹוָהי״י עַל צְבָא הַמָּרוֹם בַּמָּרוֹם וְעַל מַלְכֵי הָאֲדָמָה עַל הָאֲדָמָה.

And it shall come to pass on that day that Hashem will punish the host of the high heaven on high and the kings of the earth upon the earth.
194. וְאֻסְּפוּ אֲסֵפָה אַסִּיר עַל בּוֹר וְסֻגְּרוּ עַל מַסְגֵּר וּמֵרֹב יָמִים

196. יְהֹוָהי״י בַּצַּר

Hashem, in trouble have they sought You. Silently they poured out a prayer when Your chastening was upon them.
197. כִּי הִנֵּה

לִפְקֹד עֲוֺן יֹשֵׁב הָאָרֶץ עָלָיו וְגִלְּתָה הָאָרֶץ אֶת דָּמֶיהָ וְלֹא תְכַסֶּה עוֹד עַל הֲרוּגֶיהָ.

For, behold, Hashem comes forth out of His place to visit upon the inhabitants of the earth their iniquity. The earth also shall disclose her blood and shall not cover her slain any more.
198. בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא
יִפְקֹד יְהֹוָהי״י בְּחַרְבּוֹ הַקָּשָׁה וְהַגְּדוֹלָה וְהַחֲזָקָה עַל לִוְיָתָן נָחָשׁ בָּרִחַ וְעַל לִוְיָתָן נָחָשׁ עֲקַלָּתוֹן וְהָרַג אֶת הַתַּנִּין אֲשֶׁר בַּיָּם.

On that day, with His hard and great and strong sword, Hashem will punish leviathan the fleeing serpent, and leviathan the tortuous serpent; and He will slay the dragon that is in the sea.
199. אֲנִי
יְהֹוָהי״י נֹצְרָהּ לִרְגָעִים אַשְׁקֶנָּה פֶּן
יִפְקֹד עָלֶיהָ לַיְלָה וָיוֹם אֶצֳּרֶנָּה.

I Hashem guard it, I water it every moment. Lest one visits it in anger, I guard it night and day.
200. מֵעִם

There shall be a visitation from Hashem of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with whirlwind and tempest, and the flame of a devouring fire.
201. דִּרְשׁוּ מֵעַל סֵפֶר
יְהֹוָהי״י וּקְרָאוּ אַחַת מֵהֵנָּה לֹא נֶעְדָּרָה אִשָּׁה רְעוּתָהּ לֹא
פָקָדוּ כִּי פִי הוּא צִוָּה וְרוּחוֹ הוּא קִבְּצָן.

Seek out of the book of Hashem, and read, "No one of these shall be missing, none shall want her mate. For My mouth it has commanded, and its breath has gathered them.

פֻּקַּדְתִּי יֶתֶר שְׁנוֹתָי.

Behold, I have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms, to pluck up and to break down and to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant."

209. הֹבִישׁוּ כִּי תוֹעֵבָה עָשׂוּ גַּם בּוֹשׁ לֹא יֵבוֹשׁוּ גַּם הַכְלִים לֹא יָדָעוּ לָכֵן יִפְּלוּ בַנֹּפְלִים בְּעֵת

What will you say when He shall set over you as head those whom you have yourself taught to be friends to you? Shall not pangs take hold of you, as of a woman in travail?
214. כֹּה אָמַר
יְהֹוָהי״י לָעָם הַזֶּה כֵּן אָהֲבוּ לָנוּעַ רַגְלֵיהֶם לֹא חָשָׂכוּ וַ
יהֹוָהי״י לֹא רָצָם עַתָּה יִזְכֹּר עֲוֺנָם
וְיִפְקֹד חַטֹּאתָם.

Thus says Hashem to this people, "Even so have they loved to wander; they have not refrained their feet. Therefore Hashem does not accept them; now He will remember their iniquity, and visit their sins."
215. וּפָקַדְתִּי עֲלֵיהֶם אַרְבַּע מִשְׁפָּחוֹת נְאֻם
יְהֹוָהי״י אֶת הַחֶרֶב לַהֲרֹג וְאֶת הַכְּלָבִים לִסְחֹב וְאֶת עוֹף הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֶת בֶּהֱמַת הָאָרֶץ לֶאֱכֹל וּלְהַשְׁחִית.

I will appoint over them four kinds,' says Hashem, 'the sword to kill, and the dogs to tear, and the birds of the sky, and the animals of the earth, to devour and to destroy.

וּפׇקְדֵנִי וְהִנָּקֶם לִי מֵרֹדְפַי אַל לְאֶרֶךְ אַפְּךָ תִּקָּחֵנִי דַּע שְׂאֵתִי עָלֶיךָ חֶרְפָּה.

"Hashem, You know; remember me, and visit me, and avenge me of my persecutors. Don't take me away in Your longsuffering. Know that for Your sake I have suffered reproach.
217. וּפָקַדְתִּי עֲלֵיכֶם כִּפְרִי מַעַלְלֵיכֶם נְאֻם
יְהֹוָהי״י וְהִצַּתִּי אֵשׁ בְּיַעְרָהּ וְאָכְלָה כׇּל סְבִיבֶיהָ.

I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings,' says Hashem; 'and I will kindle a fire in her forest, and it shall devour all that is round about her.'"

יְהֹוָהי״י אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל עַל הָרֹעִים הָרֹעִים אֶת עַמִּי אַתֶּם הֲפִצֹתֶם אֶת צֹאנִי וַתַּדִּחוּם וְלֹא
פְקַדְתֶּם אֹתָם הִנְנִי
פֹקֵד עֲלֵיכֶם אֶת רֹעַ מַעַלְלֵיכֶם נְאֻם

220. וַהֲקִמֹתִי עֲלֵיהֶם רֹעִים וְרָעוּם וְלֹא יִירְאוּ עוֹד וְלֹא יֵחַתּוּ וְלֹא
יִפָּקֵדוּ נְאֻם

I will set up shepherds over them, who shall feed them; and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall any be lacking," says Hashem.

יְהֹוָהי״י וּפָקַדְתִּי עַל הָאִישׁ הַהוּא וְעַל בֵּיתוֹ.

As for the prophet, and the priest, and the people, who shall say, 'The burden of Hashem,' I will even punish that man and his house.
222. וְהָיָה כִמְלֹאות שִׁבְעִים שָׁנָה
אֶפְקֹד עַל מֶלֶךְ בָּבֶל וְעַל הַגּוֹי הַהוּא נְאֻם
יְהֹוָהי״י אֶת עֲוֺנָם וְעַל אֶרֶץ כַּשְׂדִּים וְשַׂמְתִּי אֹתוֹ לְשִׁמְמוֹת עוֹלָם.

It shall happen, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation,' says Hashem, 'for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans; and I will make it desolate forever.
223. וְהָיָה הַגּוֹי וְהַמַּמְלָכָה אֲשֶׁר לֹא יַעַבְדוּ אֹתוֹ אֶת נְבוּכַדְנֶאצַּר מֶלֶךְ בָּבֶל וְאֵת אֲשֶׁר לֹא יִתֵּן אֶת צַוָּארוֹ בְּעֹל מֶלֶךְ בָּבֶל בַּחֶרֶב וּבָרָעָב וּבַדֶּבֶר
אֶפְקֹד עַל הַגּוֹי הַהוּא נְאֻם
יְהֹוָהי״י עַד תֻּמִּי אֹתָם בְּיָדוֹ.

It shall happen, that the nation and the kingdom which will not serve him, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and that will not put their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, that nation I will punish,' says Hashem, 'with the sword, and with the famine, and with the pestilence, until I have consumed them by his hand.
224. בָּבֶלָה יוּבָאוּ וְשָׁמָּה יִהְיוּ עַד יוֹם
פׇּקְדִי אֹתָם נְאֻם
יְהֹוָהי״י וְהַעֲלִיתִים וַהֲשִׁיבֹתִים אֶל הַמָּקוֹם הַזֶּה.

'They shall be carried to Babylon, and there shall they be, until the day that I visit them,' says Hashem; 'then I will bring them up, and restore them to this place.'"

For thus says Hashem, 'After seventy years are accomplished for Babylon, I will visit you, and perform My good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.

פֹקֵד עַל שְׁמַעְיָה הַנֶּחֱלָמִי וְעַל זַרְעוֹ לֹא יִהְיֶה לוֹ אִישׁ יוֹשֵׁב בְּתוֹךְ הָעָם הַזֶּה וְלֹא יִרְאֶה בַטּוֹב אֲשֶׁר אֲנִי עֹשֶׂה לְעַמִּי נְאֻם

227. וְהָיוּ בָנָיו כְּקֶדֶם וַעֲדָתוֹ לְפָנַי תִּכּוֹן
וּפָקַדְתִּי עַל כׇּל לֹחֲצָיו.

Their children also shall be as before, and their congregation shall be established before me; and I will punish all who oppress them.
228. וּבָבֶל יוֹלִךְ אֶת צִדְקִיָּהוּ וְשָׁם יִהְיֶה עַד

יְהֹוָהי״י כִּי תִלָּחֲמוּ אֶת הַכַּשְׂדִּים לֹא תַצְלִיחוּ.

And he shall bring Zedekiah to Babylon, and there he shall be until I visit him,' says Hashem. 'Though you fight with the Chaldeans, you shall not prosper.'"
229. וַיָּבֹאוּ אֶל הַמֶּלֶךְ חָצֵרָה וְאֶת הַמְּגִלָּה
הִפְקִדוּ בְּלִשְׁכַּת אֱלִישָׁמָע הַסֹּפֵר וַיַּגִּידוּ בְּאׇזְנֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ אֵת כׇּל הַדְּבָרִים.

They went in to the king into the court; but they had laid up the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe; and they told all the words in the ears of the king.
230. וּפָקַדְתִּי עָלָיו וְעַל זַרְעוֹ וְעַל עֲבָדָיו אֶת עֲוֺנָם וְהֵבֵאתִי עֲלֵיהֶם וְעַל יֹשְׁבֵי יְרוּשָׁלַ͏ִם וְאֶל אִישׁ יְהוּדָה אֵת כׇּל הָרָעָה אֲשֶׁר דִּבַּרְתִּי אֲלֵיהֶם וְלֹא שָׁמֵעוּ.

I will punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring on them, and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and on the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them, but they didn't listen.'"
231. וַיְצַוֶּה הַמֶּלֶךְ צִדְקִיָּהוּ
וַיַּפְקִדוּ אֶת יִרְמְיָהוּ בַּחֲצַר הַמַּטָּרָה וְנָתֹן לוֹ כִכַּר לֶחֶם לַיּוֹם מִחוּץ הָאֹפִים עַד תֹּם כׇּל הַלֶּחֶם מִן הָעִיר וַיֵּשֶׁב יִרְמְיָהוּ בַּחֲצַר הַמַּטָּרָה.

Then Zedekiah the king commanded, and they committed Jeremiah into the court of the guard; and they gave him daily a loaf of bread out of the bakers' street, until all the bread in the city was spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.
232. וְעוֹדֶנּוּ לֹא יָשׁוּב וְשֻׁבָה אֶל גְּדַלְיָה בֶן אֲחִיקָם בֶּן שָׁפָן אֲשֶׁר
הִפְקִיד מֶלֶךְ בָּבֶל בְּעָרֵי יְהוּדָה וְשֵׁב אִתּוֹ בְּתוֹךְ הָעָם אוֹ אֶל כׇּל הַיָּשָׁר בְּעֵינֶיךָ לָלֶכֶת לֵךְ וַיִּתֶּן לוֹ רַב טַבָּחִים אֲרֻחָה וּמַשְׂאֵת וַיְשַׁלְּחֵהוּ.

Now while he was not yet gone back, "Go back then, to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people; or go wherever it seems right to you to go." So the captain of the guard gave him food and a present, and let him go.
233-234. וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ כׇל שָׂרֵי הַחֲיָלִים אֲשֶׁר בַּשָּׂדֶה הֵמָּה וְאַנְשֵׁיהֶם כִּי

238. מִפְּנֵי הַכַּשְׂדִּים כִּי יָרְאוּ מִפְּנֵיהֶם כִּי הִכָּה יִשְׁמָעֵאל בֶּן נְתַנְיָה אֶת גְּדַלְיָהוּ בֶּן אֲחִיקָם אֲשֶׁר

Hashem of Hosts, the God of Israel, says, "Behold, I will punish Amon of No, and Pharaoh, and Egypt, with her gods, and her kings; even Pharaoh, and those who trust in him.
243. נֻסוּ הׇפְנוּ הֶעְמִיקוּ לָשֶׁבֶת יֹשְׁבֵי דְּדָן כִּי אֵיד עֵשָׂו הֵבֵאתִי עָלָיו עֵת

It will be, like people, like priest; and I will punish them for their ways, and will repay them for their deeds.

אֶפְקוֹד עַל בְּנוֹתֵיכֶם כִּי תִזְנֶינָה וְעַל כַּלּוֹתֵיכֶם כִּי תְנָאַפְנָה כִּי הֵם עִם הַזֹּנוֹת יְפָרֵדוּ וְעִם הַקְּדֵשׁוֹת יְזַבֵּחוּ וְעָם לֹא יָבִין יִלָּבֵט.

I will not punish your daughters when they play the prostitute or your brides when they commit adultery; because they themselves consort with prostitutes, and they sacrifice with the shrine prostitutes; so the people without understanding will come to ruin.
259. זִבְחֵי הַבְהָבַי יִזְבְּחוּ בָשָׂר וַיֹּאכֵלוּ
יְהֹוָהי״י לֹא רָצָם עַתָּה יִזְכֹּר עֲוֺנָם
וְיִפְקֹד חַטֹּאותָם הֵמָּה מִצְרַיִם יָשׁוּבוּ.

As for the sacrifices that they burn before Me, they sacrifice flesh and eat it; but Hashem doesn't accept them. Now He will remember their iniquity, and punish their sins. They will return to Egypt.
260. הֶעְמִיקוּ שִׁחֵתוּ כִּימֵי הַגִּבְעָה יִזְכּוֹר עֲוֺנָם
יִפְקוֹד חַטֹּאותָם.

They have deeply corrupted themselves, as in the days of Gibeah. He will remember their iniquity. He will punish them for their sins.
261. וְרִיב לַ
יהֹוָהי״י עִם יְהוּדָה
וְלִפְקֹד עַל יַעֲקֹב כִּדְרָכָיו כְּמַעֲלָלָיו יָשִׁיב לוֹ.

Hashem also has a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his deeds He will repay him.

אֶפְקֹד עֲלֵיכֶם אֵת כׇּל עֲוֺנֹתֵיכֶם.

The coast will be for the remnant of the house of Judah. They will find pasture. In the houses of Ashkelon, they will lie down in the evening, for Hashem, their God, will remember them, and restore them.
